Uran Wetlands - A Story of Insensitive Human's
Cranes, Trucks, Laborers, JCB machines have replaced the thousands of migratory birds in Uran
The area opposite the JNPT Police station, which was feed by a sewage pipe (Freshwater) fresh water met saltwater creating a rich habitat with bull rushes and grass attracting a number of bird species and mammals like Jackals has been flattened by the reclamation.
Area opp. JNPT police station.... senseless destruction of environment

This region was known to harbour a rich variety of birdlife.....many of which are considered threatened or endangered.
Truckloads of mud participated every day to fill up the Uran wetlands
...........and made this prime wetland habitat into a barren non-descript hell.... to be converted into a world class Port.... are we not losing more than what we gain ?
The construction materials already brought in..... Witness the destruction at a hurried pace
This area had shallow saltwater marshes where the waders thrived....i.e. Once upon a Time
Efforts to keep the villagers Mouth Shut ..........
This is the only source of water (from sea) to the region....
These machines give the impression of digging our own graves........

Some construction along the periphery of the SEZ.....looks like some bridge coming up

The Reliance SEZ on NMMT land near Panje village along the sea coast....

The area near Panje village, waiting to be filled up for Reliance SEZ......

..... In complete VIOLATION of CRZ norms....a wall build right across the sea.

This region can still be saved, if common-sense and sensitivity to Nature prevails.....

..... But the wall is built right across the sea.
.... Block the sea water to come in, let the mangroves die of thirst and suffocation and fill up the land..... This is how, the mangroves are systematically KILLED and land claimed.
Mora village can be seen behind the wall......

Mud excavated from nearby Panje village.........

Is this what we are going to provide our future generations ????
Once a habitat for Jacana's, Storks, migratory ducks and waders.... they are sure to curse us who destroyed their last remaining abodes.

is there anything at all that we can do? can we all not have a protest march like they had in delhi? can we please please do something to stop this?
ReplyDeletethe destruction has an already been done. its too late
ReplyDelete@Adesh..your efforts are tremendous..in fact we followed Sunjoy Monga's birdwatching around Uran (which has now become useless) and were shocked to see these scenes last year..obviously things have worsened rapidly...people like you are unfortunately heavily outnumbered by unconcerned insensitive people who talk 'development'..the damage is irreversible..lets enjoy whatever is left to the fullest before they/we all vanish!!- Dr Arun Nayak..Kaas trip 2007
ReplyDeleteThanks for capturing this for record.
ReplyDeleteIn the name of development, the same thing is happening through out India. Whom should we blame? The insensitive government? The all powerful corrupt politicians? Or the hapless Indian common man who has hardly time to eke out his survival? But even one voice against many can make a change. Let us not give up and raise our voices against the senseless destruction of the environment. may be common sense will prevail---Hopefully
ReplyDeleteIt is possible to balance requirements of all stakeholders.
ReplyDeletesame things are happenings across the other parts ...i visited kalyan in dombivali and seen this type of activity i.e making flat ground for flat or apartments of lodha park in name of (alag abode) behind that there is already consturucted new flats have been there. the ground was very big just like above pictures. pathic useles builders.
